A collection of bronze hanging and standing sculptures by Alice Andrea Ewing.

Exploring ideas of place and landscape captured in the abstract, Alice Andrea Ewing creates these hanging and linear works, drawings transposed to bronze, alongside her botanical sculptures.

An artist and founder-sculptor living and working in Suffolk, Ewing’s work explores notions of place, ecological value, presence and embodiment through an intimate relationship with materials and process. Working as a founder-sculptor, the majority of her work is produced using the Renaissance Investment Casting process. Her proximity to the medium and all processes within it is an integral aspect of her practice.

Ewing’s larger sculptural works attempt ‘to make the quick long’, translating sketches and informal cartographies into bronze through an adaptation of the Lost Wax technique.

I have always created these hanging and linear works alongside my botanical sculptures. They are a different visual languages, required to say different things. All my work explores place and landscape to an extent, but there are themes and experiences which I find are better captured in the abstract. Hence these hanging and sitting works, drawings transposed to bronze. 

The earliest mobiles were maps, mapping water ways, rivers and coastal landscapes as I felt or saw them. Works here continue these themes, documenting estuaries or walks through the turned fields of Suffolk. 

In a way, they are also an exploration of the medium bronze and my relationship with it. I like to cast directly, as with my Pomarius works. These pieces are created in reed and wax from sketches made in the landscape, and are then cut up and cast without a mould, producing a unique piece as all elements are taken through the kiln and ‘lost’. These works move the drawn line into the cast line, keeping the idea or the feeling through changing media and dimensions. It’s an aspect of bronze I find intriguing generally, the way a work changes so much across the various processes without losing its essential essence. 

The smaller works, referred to as the ‘Navigation Series’, take the informal cartography of the other works and apply it to an interior landscape. These singular bronze works are a series of repeated forms and shapes, revised and recombined. They are works that cluster, pointing at something and at nothing. I’ve come to realise that they are in fact a means of orientation; small acts made within a studio practice now competing for time in the early years of motherhood. Just enough to remember, to stay in touch, to keep some space open and to return to.

Once your online transaction has been completed your order will be confirmed by email within 24 hours. If your order is placed on a Friday, or over the weekend, your item will be shipped within 3 days from the Monday. Orders are posted Wednesday to Saturday.

Using Royal Mail our shipping rates are calculated based on the estimated weight and size of the items. 

You have the option of First Class Delivery (which cannot be tracked), or Tracked delivery ( to enable you to track your package through all stages of the delivery process)

UK CUSTOMERS

Please allow 3-5 working days for delivery in the UK. In most cases it will be less.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS

We do ship outside of the UK and are delighted to do so, but we ask you to email, susanna@themerchantstable.co.uk, so we may give you an accurate shipping cost to your destination.

Any customs or import duties are charged once the parcel reaches its destination country. These charges must be paid by the recipient of the parcel. Unfortunately, we have no control over these charges, and cannot tell you what the cost would be, as customs policies and import duties vary widely from country to country.

DUTIES

We recommend contacting your local customs office for current charges before you order, so you are not surprised by charges you were not expecting.

Please be aware that your parcel can be also delayed by customs and subsequent charges can be applied. We have no control over this, and cannot supply any details why or for how long your parcel will be delayed.

If you are unhappy with our products in any way, they can be returned provided they are in saleable condition.

If you wish to return your item and receive a full refund items need to posted/couriered back to us within 7 days of being received by you.

Please note refunds to Debit/Credit Cards normally clear in 1/2 days after receipt of the returned goods.

Returns received outside the above time frame will not be accepted. For all returns you will be required to arrange and pay for the return of the products to us.

We will only accept returns provided the goods are received by us in the condition they were in when delivered to you.

Alice Andrea Ewing

Bronze sculptor Alice Andrea Ewing grew up in Suffolk and currently lives and works in the county. After reading History of Art at Cambridge University, she began training under the sculptor Laurence Edwards in an atelier studio context. In 2016 she established a studio and foundry with fellow artist, Freddy Morris, in Brandeston.
