Emily Mitchell responded to our ‘Ritual’ - Midsummer Exhibition, by producing a collection of ceramic pieces based around characters from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream.

“I have created a new collection of ceramic pieces based around characters from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The action in the play pivots around the antics of Puck and the love potion he uses on the pairs of lovers lost in the forest on Midsummer’s Eve.  The forms of the pieces are loosely based around potion bottles, vials and containers, which might be imagined to hold the essences made from flowers mentioned in the play, that Puck drops into the lovers’ eyes. I see these objects as symbolic and metaphoric.

To develop unusual and ‘magical’ midsummer forms, I looked at a variety of objects such as antique sugar sifters, gambling cups, and 18C century wig stands. The forms I’ve made are thrown and handbuilt in creamware, with slip dot decoration bearing the names of the fairies such as Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed and Peaseblossom.”

Emily Mitchell is an artist and ceramicist producing hand-built, thrown and painted ceramics from her studio in Norfolk. Emily’s work grows out of an interest in how everyday and historic objects tell their own stories. She loves narrative and classic fiction and often use literature as a source for ideas, whilst also looking at and working with museum collections and archives, exploring historic forms and techniques.
